Google’s Updates Its Anti-Piracy Filter for the First Time in 2 Years


After increasing criticisms from former News Corp Chairman James Murdoch, Google announced this week that it will be updating its Pirate filter to help push search results to legitimate media sources. The refresh of Pirate is set to come out some time this week, and sites under penalty could see their first chance to get out from under for the first time in years.

The Pirate filter, first introduced in August 2012, is designed to use Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) piracy reports to penalize websites that may be dealing in pirated content. The time the filter ran in 2012; it removed over 51 million websites from search results.

Following on the filter update, Google is also introduce now new SERP features, designed to steer the more law-abiding web citizens to more legitimate outlets. AdWords will now most results to online stores, and a new sidebar will show a media summary and paid links to purchase content.

This could be a real hit for newer websites hosting pirated content, as the Pirate algorithm has never affected them before, like Penguin and Panda the filter only flags sites when the filter is initially run, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens next.
